How to flush a water heater

The water heater maker A. O. Smith says most tank water heaters should be flushed at least once a year.

How to do it

  1. Turn off the power, or turn the gas control off, and wait a few hours so the water can cool.
  2. Turn off the cold water supply to the heater.
  3. Connect a garden hose to the drain valve and run it to a floor drain or outside.
  4. Open a hot water tap in the house, then open the drain valve and let the tank empty.
  5. Close the drain valve, turn the water supply back on and let the tank fill before you restore the power or gas.

Tank water can scald. Let it cool first, and wear thick gloves and safety goggles.

Why it matters

Sediment builds up in the tank, cutting efficiency and raising the risk of leaks and bad smells. Follow the manual for your own model.
